Victor de Broglie (1785–1870)

Achille- Léon -Victor, 3rd duc de Broglie [ də brɔj ] ( born December 1, 1785 Paris, † January 25, 1870 ) was a French statesman and diplomat from the family of the Dukes de Broglie.

Biography

Victor de Broglie, son of 1794 guillotined General Claude -Victor de Broglie, was under Napoleon Bonaparte State Council, Legal Assistant, military intendant in Illyria, then in Valladolid, Attaché and later Counsellor in Vienna, Prague and Warsaw.

After the death of his grandfather, Victor- François de Broglie (1804 ) he became 3rd Duke de Broglie. 1814 Pair appointed, he was decidedly liberal, agreed with neys process for " not guilty " and fought in the Chamber of Peers with determination the reactionary politics of restoration; he belonged to the party of the doctrinaire and represented as a comrade Guizots the principles of constitutional hereditary monarchy.

After the July Revolution, he was on July 30, 1830 temporary interior minister, on August 11, Minister of Culture and Public Education and President of the State Council, but resigned in November with the other doctrinaire. From October 1832 to April 1834, then from November 1834 to February 1836 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and from March 1835 until his resignation at the same time Prime Minister. As such, he led the negotiations with Great Britain about the mutual right of search, and the abolition of slavery.

Since then he has refused repeated requests from the formation of a ministry. In 1845 he gave in London, the differences on the right of search, in 1847 the French ambassador in London, but was recalled in March 1848 by the provisional government.

In May 1849 he became a member of the National Assembly, where he was one of the leaders of the right. In January 1851 he became president of the security committee, operating in particular constitutional revision, protested against the coup d'etat of December 2, 1851 and then retired into private life.

Since 1855 member of the Académie française, he died on January 25, 1870 in Paris.

Was married to the Duke since 1816 with Baroness Albertine Staël von Holstein ( 1797-1839 ), daughter of Anne Louise Germaine de Staël, with whom he had the following children:

Works

Broglie published his literary works under the title: " Écrits et discours " (Paris, 1863, 3 volumes).

From his estate, his son Albert gave out: " Vues sur le gouvernement de la France; ouvrage inédit " (1870, 2nd edition 1871) and" Free Trade, Le et l' impôt " (1879 ).

His wife Albertine wrote "Fragments sur divers sujets de religion et de morale" ( Anonymous, 1840).
