Victor Duruy

Victor Duruy ( born September 11, 1811 in Paris, † November 25, 1894 ) was a French historian and politician.

Life

Victor Duruy was formed in the Ecole Normale, and left the same in 1833, to act as a teacher of history at the Lycée Henri IV. After teaching at various high schools, he was in 1861 inspector of the school board of Paris, then Inspector General of secondary education and a professor of history at the École polytechnique.

By participating in Napoleon III. Work on Julius Caesar, he came into close contact with the Emperor, who in 1863 appointed him as Minister of Culture.

He developed a fruitful reformatory activities, met with several laudable measures, including the reintroduction of philosophical disciplines and the establishment of a Chair of History at the schools, but especially uplift and improve the rate of the elementary teacher, built the École pratique des hautes études, led the physical education in the higher schools, founded State higher daughters schools etc.

The introduction of the so-called Conferences littéraires who are now spread all over France, is his work. His other claims and engaging, particularly the introduction of compulsory education and the free nature of elementary school teaching, encountered the most stubborn resistance of the clerical party, which he was unable to break at the low support from the Liberals. This just attacks in the National Assembly, he had to give way and resigned in July 1869.

The emperor appointed him senator.

He wrote several volumes edited by him Histoire universelle. In 1879 he became a member of the Institute.
