Victor Ling

Victor Ling ( born March 16, 1943 in China ) is a Canadian biochemist who researched the mechanism of action of cancer chemotherapeutic agents.

Ling came as a child from China to Canada. He made 1966 his bachelor's degree at the University of Toronto and became a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1969. 1971 to 1996 he was at the Ontario Cancer Institute and from 1983 to 1996 Professor of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. Since 1996 he is professor in the Department of Pathology and Biochemistry at the University of British Columbia ( UBC). He is co -director of the Center for Integrated Genomics and Assistant Dean of Cancer Research at the Medical Faculty of the UBC and Vice President for Research at the British Columbia Cancer Agency in Vancouver.

Ling is an expert in multi - resistance of tumors to chemotherapeutic agents and found in many tumors ( but also in some normal cells ) responsible for protein (P- glycoprotein ), the first discovered such multidrug resistance protein.

In 1992 he received the Gairdner Foundation International Award. He received the 1988 Cancer Research Award from the Milken Family Foundation, 1991 Kettering Prize, the 1994 Robert L. Noble Prize from the National Cancer Institute of Canada, 1991 Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Research Award and the 1993 Bruce F. Cain Memorial Award from the American Association of Cancer research. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He is a member of the Order of British Columbia ( 2000) and is an officer of the Order of Canada (2008). In 2006 he was made an honorary Doctor of Trinity Western University.
