Victor Segalen

Victor Segalen, actually Ambroise Joseph Désiré Segalen ( born January 14, 1878 in Brest, Finistère department, † May 21 1919 in Huelgoat, Finistère department ), was a French writer, naval surgeon, anthropologist and archaeologist.

Life

Victor Segalen studied medicine in Bordeaux. He traveled in French Polynesia (1903-1905) and China (1909-1914 and 1917 ). If you stay in the Marquesas Islands in 1903 he bought the last sketches of Paul Gauguin, who had died a few months before his arrival and which would otherwise have been destroyed. He came, exhausted by illness, an accident in the forest of Huelgoat (Brittany ) died. To him, the Université Bordeaux II was named in honor.
