Victor Surbek

Victor Surbek ( born 1 November 1885 in Zäziwil, † March 26, 1975 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter, watercolorist, draftsman, printmaker and illustrator. He ran until 1931 with his wife Marguerite Frey- Surbek a painting school in Berne.

Life

Victor Surbek was born the son of a doctor. In 1893 he moved to Bern and visited the local Literargymnasium. At the trade school he took classes in life drawing and landscape painting. In 1904 he finished school with the Matura.

By Ernst Linck he learns the painting of Ferdinand Hodler know and decides himself to painting.

From 1904 to 1906 he attended the School of Applied Arts in Munich, from 1907 to 1909 in Karlsruhe. From 1909 to 1911 he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, and copied in the Louvre.

In 1914 he closed his marriage with the painter Marguerite Frey, with whom he ran his own painting school in Berne from 1915 to 1931. He taught there, among others, Serge Brignoni, Max Ernst Bohlen and Braker.

From 1919 on, he had a studio in the country house of the parents in Iseltwald on Lake Brienz, where he often spent the summer. He made ​​numerous trips through Europe, Africa and America. In 1930 he invited Max Bohlen, to travel with him for two months after Corsica.

In 1932 he painted the picture Round Table - a group of artists and art lovers, the thundering daily in the café met harmony - and created a document that besides himself, among others, the painters Herold Howald, Paul Zehnder, Max Bohlen, the art historian Wilhelm Stein and the sculptor Max Fueter shows.

In 1938 he designed together with Hans Erni parts of a banknote series of the Swiss franc. The series was already printed, but never came into circulation, because a Lucerne parliamentarians objected that " just as a Communist Erni " have received this order.
