Victory Square, Kaliningrad

Ploshchad Pobedy (Russian Площадь победы, German: Victory Square ) is a central place in Kaliningrad, the capital of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast.

History

Until 1934 it was called Hansa place and during the Third Reich Adolf Hitler Platz. After the destruction of the historic center in the battle for Königsberg 1945, Ploshchad Pobedy developed into one of the new city centers.

Location

Today, there are numerous banks, shops, shopping centers and the city administration. Built in 1930, The North Station also includes a business center. Built in 1923 by Hans Hopp new city hall is named after a conversion even today the municipal seat (2008). In the environment of the square are a number of renovated old houses villas that provide an impression of the historical Königsberg wealth. Other prominent buildings are the former court ( now University ) with a Baroque portal, the former police headquarters ( the Soviet era KGB), and the former main post office (now the General Staff of the Baltic Fleet ).

As part of the 750 -year celebration of Kaliningrad 2005, the site was designed representative, in particular received a fountain in its center, and it was opened in the newly built Christ the Savior Cathedral. The Lenin monument, which was located in front of the cathedral, was removed from the square and then re-erected at another place in Kaliningrad in spring 2006.
