Vienna Game

The Vienna Game is an opening of the chess game.

The Vienna Game is one of the open-ended play and begins with the trains 1.e2 -e4 e7 - e5 2.Sb1 - c3. The ECO codes are C25 to C29. There are reconciliations to the King's Gambit, the Bishop's and the Four Knights possible.

The origin of the opening is already mentioned in 1857 by the Lasas "Guide for chess players ", "This is customary in Vienna train the knight " (p.47 ), in the edition of 1880 of the same work says, " hence the name Vienna Game " (p. 61). The original idea, first the central squares to cover d5 and e4 and then to play a kind of delayed King's Gambit with f2 - f4, comes from the Viennese chess champion Carl Hamppe ( 1814-1876 ), was in the 19th century but also "by other Viennese masters cultivated. The opening is nowadays usually treated positionally (without the advance f2 - f4). It turns white hard case to claim the first-move advantage. Therefore, this opening between grandmasters is rarely played.

The main variants

The following main variants are known:

  • 2 ... Ng8 - f6 3 Lf1 - c4 (after Sf6xe4 can 4.Dd1 - h5 follow with sharp transition in the Frankenstein - Dracula Variation)
  • 2 ... Ng8 - f6 3 g2 - g3, the positional Fianchetto system
  • 2 ... Ng8 f6 - f2 - f4 3 d7 -d5 4 f4xe5 Sf6xe4 5 Dd1 -f3 Sb8 - 6 c6 - b5 Lf1 Se4xc3 is the main variant
  • 2 ... Sb8 - c6 - c4 3 Lf1 or f2 - f4 ( Vienna Gambit different variants). 3 Sg1 -f3 leads into the three- or Four Knights. 2 ... c6 3 Sb8 - f2 - f4 d2 -d4 e5xf4 4, the Steinitz Gambit
  • 2 ... c6 3 Sb8 - f2 - f4 -f3 e5xf4 4 Sg1 g7- g5 5 d2 -d4, the Pierce Gambit
  • 2 ... c6 3 Sb8 - f2 - f4 -f3 e5xf4 4 Sg1 g7- g5 5 h2 - h4 g5 - g4 - g5 6 Nf3, the Hamppe - Allgaier Gambit
  • 2 ... c6 3 Sb8 - f2 - f4 -f3 e5xf4 4 Sg1 g7- g5 5 Lf1 - c4 g5 - g4 6 0-0, the Hamppe - Muzio Gambit

2 ... Bf8 - c5 (See Immortal drawn game ) should be used with 3 -f3 d7 - d6 Sg1 ( 3 ... Sb8 - c6 leads to Dreispringer play) 4 d2 -d4 answered.
