Viguerie

A Viguerie was a medieval legal authority in France. It dates from the Carolingian period and designated the seat of the imperial administration officials. With the decline of the central power, the importance of Viguerie fell until they only represented the lowest trial court, which dealt with current affairs. The incumbent was called Viguier.

The Vigueries were dissolved in the great majority in 1749 by a royal edict. Exception was the Provence where they remained until the French Revolution.

Other regional names of the same office are:

  • Châtellenie (castle bailiwick )
  • Prévôté ( Bailiwick )
  • Vicomté ( vice- county in Normandy )
  • Bailliage ( bailiwick in the Midi ) and
  • Sénéchaussée.
