Vijay Hazare

Vijay Samuel Hazare ( born March 11, 1915 in Sangli, Maharashtra, † December 18, 2004 in Vadodara, Gujarat ) was an Indian cricketer.

He was the first Indian who was captain of the national team, and he led India in Madras 1951/52, for the first victory in Test cricket against England. This was the only win at this level during his time as captain. The next victory of an Indian national was only 23 years later against the West Indies.

He received his education at the Presbyterian Mission Industrial School in Sangli, Maharashtra. From his mother, he was very devout, educated, which meant that he founded the Catholic Gymkhana cricket team.

In the first Indian League Hazare played for the team from Maharashtra, Central India and Baroda. In Test matches ( internationals ) his batting average was 47.65 per match, and he scored a total of 2,192 runs. Hazare died in 2004 from cancer.
