Viktor Car-Emin

Viktor Car Emin ( born 1 November 1870 in Kraj in Lovran, Istria ( to Austria - Hungary belonging ), today Croatia, † April 17, 1963 in Opatija, Croatia) was a Croatian writer.

Life

Viktor Car was the son of a sailor. After marrying in 1897 Ema Jurkovic, he took their first names as a second surname Emin. He attended elementary school in Lovran Italian and the Hungarian school in Rijeka, before he began a commercial apprenticeship. Finally, he graduated from the tri-lingual teacher training institute in Koper and became a teacher. He also led the Istrian Cyril and Methodius Society and edited the magazines and Mladic Mladic Istranin Hrvat. In 1919 he was a deputy in the National Assembly for Rijeka and Susak. From 1921 he lived in Opatija, but was retired in 1925 by the fascists and was considered persona non grata in Italy, so that he emigrated in 1929 after Susak in Yugoslavia. After the war he returned to Opatija, which now belonged to Yugoslavia and remained there until his death. Since 1949 he was a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1960 he was awarded the Order bratstva i jedinstva.

Works

Car Emin's work centered mainly on the sea and the lives of fishermen and sailors. He was a native Istrian writer and wrote novels, short stories and Youth books. He used a čakavischen dialect. Translations into German are as good as none before.
