Villancico

Villancico is the Spanish term for a certain type of song.

In everyday parlance, the term refers to a Christmas song. Originally, in the 13th century, it was, however, generally to songs that were sung at certain festivals. Only later, the meaning of the word concentrated on the Christmas carol.

The preform of villancicos were medieval secular dance songs ( the Villanos ) were sung by the common people. When the church began to exert influence on the folk customs, they also adapted such songs. Later created new spiritual villancicos. The most important collection appeared in 1582 under the title " Piae cantiones " in Latin. Many of the songs contained herein have been compiled and obtained in this way popularity.

Villancicos of the Renaissance were at the time also composed for three or four voices, or for singing the vihuela.
