Villány

Villány [ vil ː a ː ɲ ] ( German Wieland, Vilanj Croatian, Serbian Вилањ ) is a town in Baranya County in southern Hungary. According to her, the Villány Mountains and a well-known wine-growing region is named on the seven hills.

History

The "City of Grapes and Wine " is a railway hub, and offers numerous attractions. She is also still inhabited by Danube Swabians who were settled after the Turkish wars of Maria Theresa there. They brought new varieties to Hungary (eg Blue Portugal ) and developed some prosperity.

1946, after the Second World War, many German were expelled from Hungary. This was unlike in the Sudetenland or in Yugoslavia, mostly without violence. Many monuments in the area reminiscent of that era.

Villány and many other places and cities in the settlement areas of the Danube Swabians have today on bilingual signposts, some even trilingual (in addition Croatian or Serbian).

The wine from Villány and the surrounding area has also earned a good reputation outside Hungary. Especially Budapest wine connoisseurs but are willing to pay high prices for wines from top wineries from Villány. There are numerous wine cellars on the Wine Route Villany - Siklos. In contrast to the neighboring Weißweinort Siklos, Villány is famous for its red wines, which have the place the nickname " Bordeaux of the East" introduced.

Near the village is located in the southwestern part of the district, to the conical mountain Nagyharsány -hegy, a sculpture park, which was created by a sculptor symposium Villány in 1968.

Twinning

Villany has been twinned with the German community Eislingen / Fils in the east of Baden-Württemberg, near the state capital Stuttgart. It exists since the mid-1980s and was one of the first partnerships of Baden- Württemberg city in Hungary.
