Villar de Cañas

The municipality of Villar de Cañas is located in central Spain, about 130 km south-east of Madrid in the province of Cuenca, in the " Autonomous Community " Castile -La Mancha ( Castilla La Mancha also ). It has 479 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013)

Interim storage of nuclear waste

In December 2011, the site received after several years of nationwide debate the tender for the construction of an interim storage facility for nuclear waste central Spanish; at the time of the location decision a shelf life of about 60 years was provided.

Reception

According to reports, the local community and business leaders welcomed the decision for economic reasons.

Opponents object to the given earthquake risk in the region.
