Villard de Honnecourt

Villard de Honnecourt (also Wilars dehonecort or Vilar dehoncort; * before 1230 Honnecourt -sur -Escaut, Picardie, † after 1235 ) was a master builder from Honnecourt -sur -Escaut in Picardy, whose activity detectable in the period around 1230 to 1235 is.

Villard was the author of a sketchbook, of which a manuscript is preserved in the National Library in Paris. The exact purpose of the sketchbook is still controversial. It could well have been a private sketchbook, a Bauhütte book or even a textbook.

The 33 -page book consists of a collection of drawings and sketches that represent buildings, construction techniques, construction tools, figures, design principles and animals. It is supplemented, such as a perpetual motion machine by some inventions. The sketchbook is regarded as one of the primary source documents of the Middle Ages on the subject of architecture and construction. It is obtained as a single book of its kind from the High Gothic period.

Villard de Honnecourt had a significant role in shaping the Cathedral of Chartres, he designed the famous Chartres labyrinth.
