Villers-sur-Mer

Villers -sur -Mer is a commune of the Calvados département in the Basse -Normandie. Administratively, it is assigned to the canton of Trouville- sur- Mer and the arrondissement of Lisieux.

Geography

The village with 2684 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is located between Deauville and Cabourg on a wooded hill in the Pays d'Auge. In the east, 30 acres close to a swamp, where, among other things happen moorhens.

History

Finds at the nearby Vaches Noires - cliff - contributed to the dinosaur finds in France. The orientation of the place on the tourism began in 1852, as a first hotel was built. In 1901 there were 1441 inhabitants. 1922, the site was classified as a health resort. In June 1940, Villers -sur -Mer was occupied by the Wehrmacht and relieved by the 1st Belgian Infantry Brigade under General Jean -Baptiste Piron in August 1944. Thereupon a number of refugees settled in the place, so that its population in 1946 to 1761 population increase.
