Vincenzo Ruffo

Vincenzo Ruffo (c. 1510 in Verona, † February 9, 1587 in Sacile in Udine ) was an Italian priest, conductor and composer.

Life

After ordination, he knew at first only spiritual offices in Verona and Milan. It was not until 1551, after his return to his hometown, he was also a musician. First, as maestro di musica at the Accademia Filarmonica, from 1554 as Director of Music. From 1563 on, he provided the same location in Milan and after that in Pistoia and Sacile. He was the Counter-Reformation since 1560 followers and followed thereafter in his works the decisions of the Council of Trent.

He was a prolific composer, creating in addition to numerous sacred works, including masses, motets and madrigals, secular music being here, his Capricci in musica are particularly important. His works are of great compositional quality, although the restrictions disabled by the Council of Trent his musical development. He is considered one of the most important Italian composers of the 16th century.
