Formation

The Violin Sonata No. 4 was built in the years 1800/ 01, coinciding with the 1801 composed Violin Sonata No. 5 in F Major, Opus 24, the "Spring Sonata ". As the " Spring Sonata " is dedicated op 23 Moritz Count von Fries the Sonata.

About the Music

The Violin Sonata Op 23 forms with its dramatic mood a contrast to the same time as incurred, serene " Spring Sonata ". With two plants Beethoven finally leaves the level of the hitherto usual opportunity of violin sonatas music.

1st movement: Presto

The first movement is dominated by a vast implementation that meets the 71 measures long exposure to 92 cycles. It processes the main theme and the two motives of reconciliation. A reworking of the main theme is heard instead of the expected recapitulation and again in the coda.

2nd movement: Andante più allegretto scherzoso

The scale in sonata form Andante più allegretto scherzoso obtained only by the clock from 8 -onset violin metric stability. The reconciliation is created as a counterpoint.

3rd movement: Allegro molto

The finale is marked by the same drama as the first set. After the three couplets of the sentence follows a set deadline, the musicologist Peter Cahn considers to be extended coda. Shortly before the final closure of the set to sound the three couplets again.

From the sketches of the composer shows that Beethoven three designs for the conclusion of the sonata worked out until he decided for the present, unconventional version.

Effect

First, both sonatas were published under the joint opus number 23. The allocation to the opus numbers 23 and 24 was probably when by mistake the publisher of the Violin " Spring Sonata " was printed not in the usual portrait, but in landscape mode.

Even during the publication of both sonatas under the joint opus number 23 was certified by the " General musical newspaper" two works not to be " a little seasoned only with a volatile, new idea," and wrote:

" Rec counts them among the best that B. has written, and that really means yes, under the best that are currently being written now at all. "

Today, the Violin Sonata Op 23 stands in the shadow of the " Spring Sonata ".
