Vir (Posušje)

Vir is a village community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the border with Croatia and part of the greater community Posušje. The nearest major town is Posušje. To the west of Vir is Zavelim, south Podbila and the Croatian border, east Vinjani.

Vir has 1,430 inhabitants, mostly Croats who live in several small villages named after family clans. The predominant religious denomination is Catholic.

History

Through the centuries, Vir various surrounding communities was repeatedly assigned times was Imotski, a nearby Croatian town home community, sometimes it was Posušje, between the community Ratko Peric, today Tomislav degrees north of Vir.

Vir fell in 1513 as the last place in Herzegovina into Turkish hands. 1903/ 04, the first school was built in Vir.

Every year on August 5, see Vir on the Megdan bullfights. In contrast to the Spanish bullfight fights in Vir " bull against bull ". Each clan has a bull and let him fight. At this festival the many " Virani " from Germany, Austria, America, etc. come back home to visit their relatives and to show the children their origin.

The name Vir ( whirlpool ) derives from the many sources that gush forth at each corner of the village in the spring.

Parish Vir

Vir is the oldest parish, which has been separated from the mother parish Posušje on April 27, 1871. Until 1910, were in Vir Franciscan monks, the Dominicans came. The church was built by Fra Bono Šarić 1895, and the rectory was (1871-1872 ) built by Fra Andrija Knezović. In the years after the war, the church was completely renovated, paved and widened the road again, and built a new chapel at the cemetery.
