Virbius

Virbius is in Roman mythology, a deity from the vicinity of Diana Nemorensis. The name is interpreted in Servius as to virum ( " two man ").

Virbius was the Greek hero Hippolytus, son of Theseus, identified. This was cursed by his father because of mistakenly thought that Hippolytus had trespassed on his stepmother Phaedra. Then Hippolytus was attacked by Poseidon at sea level and shattered by his continuous horses. In one variant of the myth he does not remain dead but is resurrected by Asclepius. He was then either emigrated to Italy, where I founded the sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis in Aricia, and he was transferred from Artemis to where he was worshiped under the name Virbius of the Latins.

The reason for the equation was called that Hippolytus was killed by horses and horses in the grove of Aricia were taboo. But that seems implausible, since the taboo was referring to the whole sanctuary and was not specific for Virbius. From Horace the equation is rejected. Background information could include that both Diana and who also worshiped at the shrine Nymph Egeria were deities of women and specific helper at birth. A special relationship with women but has also Hippolytus, the virgins sacrificed a lock before the wedding. So also suspected Georg Wissowa in Hippolytus a " birth shelf demon ".

It was suspected that was chosen as the anniversary of the legend torn by horses Martyr Hippolytus of Rome wisely August 13, as this day is also the main festival of the shrine of Aricia.

The rising of Bovillae by Aricia street called clivus Virbi. She was known for there very numerous present beggar nation that apparently hoped that the pilgrims to the shrine alms.

Virbius seems to have been depicted as an older man. His cult image could not be touched. A worship outside the sanctuary of Aricia it seems to have hardly any. The only evidence of such a cult is a grave inscription that mentions a flamen Virbialis, a priest of the Virbius.

In Virgil, a son of the same of Virbius - Hippolyte, who leads the Latins of Acacia Aeneas against Turnus appears below. In Silius Italicus finally Virbius is one of three sons of Egeria. His brothers are Capys and Albanus.
