The nuclear power plant in Visaginas ( Lithuanian Visagino Atomine elektrinė shortly UAE) is a planned nuclear power plant in Lithuania at the lake Drūkšiai near the town of Visaginas at the Belarusian- Lithuanian border. The construction is unlikely for a referendum against the power plant as well as a victory of the construction skeptical about standing opposition parties.
History
The nuclear power plant in Visaginas will replace the two 2004 and 2009 set-aside blocks of the present Ignalina nuclear power plant. It will generate electricity for the countries of Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland. The Russian nuclear power plant Kaliningrad to compete in the future with the nuclear power plant in Visaginas. In February 2007, the three Baltic States and Poland agreed to build a nuclear power plant with a maximum of 3200 MWe. In April 2009, were still 11 types of power plants in the selection, in September, a financial plan was presented and adopted by the government. In April 2010, the offers were obtained. However, the participating governments reaffirmed their commitment to continue the project.
On June 2, 2011 announced Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas that two offers from Westinghouse and Hitachi -GE were available, which would now be discussed with the partner countries, and that would be selected the winner in the next few months. On October 14, 2012 at the same place with the election a referendum on a re-entry of Lithuania into the use of nuclear energy instead, which is only for Parliament but an "advisory " and not binding. The nuclear- critical opposition parties won the general election, while decided in the referendum, 64.8 % of the voters against the power plant. So the plans are faced with disaster.
