Reactors in the planning stage:

The nuclear power plant in Visaginas ( Lithuanian Visagino Atomine elektrinė shortly UAE) is a planned nuclear power plant in Lithuania at the lake Drūkšiai near the town of Visaginas at the Belarusian- Lithuanian border. The construction is unlikely for a referendum against the power plant as well as a victory of the construction skeptical about standing opposition parties.

History

The nuclear power plant in Visaginas will replace the two 2004 and 2009 set-aside blocks of the present Ignalina nuclear power plant. It will generate electricity for the countries of Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland. The Russian nuclear power plant Kaliningrad to compete in the future with the nuclear power plant in Visaginas. Since the Polish Parliament on 16 May 2011 with 404 votes and only two votes against and one abstention, adopted the Atom entry, to be built at the nuclear power plant Żarnowiec two new nuclear power reactors, which are also expected to compete for electricity customers in the region. In addition to be built from Klaipeda to Nybro in Sweden, the 700 MWe - line " NordBalt ". The various orders were won to the end of December 2010 by ABB and amount to about $ 580 million of which € 175 million from the European Union are provided. A further 350 MWe line with the name Estlink should arise between Estonia and Finland.

In February 2007, the three Baltic States and Poland agreed to build a nuclear power plant with a maximum of 3200 MWe. Although the plant is to be built in close proximity to the old power station, it was named after the nearby town of Visaginas. Also in February 2007, started the Environmental Impact Assessment ( EIA). This was made public in August 2008. The already used cooling water from the reactor to be cooled either directly into the lake, through cooling towers or both together. The thermal effect on the lake should not change it. The power plant is more than 20% of the surface water heated to a maximum temperature of 28 ° C. For operation in the same month, the Visagino Atomine Elektrine (UAE ) was established.

In April 2009, were still 11 types of power plants in the selection, in September, a financial plan was presented and adopted by the government. An investor should have about 51 % of the plant, the rest of the Lithuanian Lietuvos Energia, Latvian and Estonian Eesti Energia Latvenergo and Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE ). In April 2010, the offers were obtained. The tender however failed received in December as the only two offers, one of which did not meet the requirements and the other of Korea Electric Power Corporation ( KEPCO ) was withdrawn after two weeks. However, the participating governments reaffirmed their commitment to continue the project.

On June 2, 2011 announced Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas that two offers from Westinghouse and Hitachi -GE were available, which would now be discussed with the partner countries, and that would be selected the winner in the next few months. Here, the AP1000 ( Westinghouse ) and ABWR were (Hitachi - GE) in the Endausschreibung. On 14 July 2011, the ABWR, Hitachi -GE has been selected, by the time being only a block to be erected. Visaginas would make the first nuclear power plant in Europe, which is being built with Japanese reactors. The purchase agreement is to be signed at the end of 2011. In December 2011, the exit of Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE ) from the consortium was known which would in future focus on building their own nuclear power plants in Poland.

On October 14, 2012 at the same place with the election a referendum on a re-entry of Lithuania into the use of nuclear energy instead, which is only for Parliament but an "advisory " and not binding. The nuclear- critical opposition parties won the general election, while decided in the referendum, 64.8 % of the voters against the power plant. So the plans are faced with disaster.
