Viscount Hampden

Viscount Hampden is a hereditary British title of nobility, which was created twice, once in the Peerage of Great Britain and the second time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is supported by the family fire.

Ancestral home of the family is Glynde Place in Lewes in Sussex.

Ceremonies

The title was first awarded in 1776 in the Peerage of Great Britain to the diplomats and politicians Robert Hampden, 4th Baron Trevor. He had held the office of Postmaster General for several years. The title became extinct in 1824 with the death of the third Viscount.

The second ceremony took place in 1884 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to a liberal politician and long-time Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Henry Brand.

In both ceremonies, the title holder of the patriot John Hampden, a leader of the bourgeois revolution during the English Civil War (1642-1649) originate from.

Subordinate title

The father of the first Viscount of the ceremony of 1776 Sir Thomas Trevor was in turn an important lawyer and politician. He was raised in 1712 for Baron Trevor. After his son had been raised to the Viscount, the barony was run as a subordinate item. This was extinguished simultaneously with the Viscountswürde.

The first Viscount of second award inherited in 1890 upon the death of his elder brother the title of Baron Dacre, an old English barony from the year 1321. When the fourth Viscount died in 1965 without male descendants, the Viscountswürde fell to his younger brother. The title of Baron Dacre contrast could also be inherited in the female line.
