Viscount Rothermere
Viscount Rothermere, of Hemsted in the County of Kent, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is run by a branch of the Harmsworth family.
Award
The title was created in 1919 for the newspaper magnate Harold Harmsworth. He had made his widely read tabloids at the service of the Allied war propaganda. In addition, he had been temporarily Chairman of the Air Force Council ( President of the Air Council) in government Lloyd George.
Subordinate title
The first Viscount was in 1910, made a baronet, of Hemsted in the county of Kent. 1914 Harmsworth was raised as Baron Rothermere, of Hemsted in the county of Kent, in the hereditary nobility. The latter title also belongs to the peerage of the United Kingdom. Both titles are listed as subordinate titles from the respective Viscount.
Other titles of the family
Of the four brothers of the first Viscount was the oldest (Alfred Harmsworth ) also Viscount, while a younger ( Cecil Harmsworth ) was raised to Baron Harmsworth. The other two brothers received baronetcies.
However, an inheritance rights among themselves is not.
The respective Viscount is always chairman of Daily Mail and General Trust, one of the largest media groups in the UK. These include, among others, the Daily Mail and Evening Standard newspapers and various local newspapers, to participate in Independent Television News and local radio stations in the United Kingdom and Australia.
The family is with assets of more than one billion pounds of number 51 in the Sunday Times Rich List 2006.
