Visualization (computer graphics)

With visualization or illustration ( visualization ) is meant in general, to bring abstract data ( such as text ) and relationships in a graphical or visually detectable form. These include the implementation of a marketing concept with advertising that the development of a script of a drama or the gestural representation of the object at a lecture or process visualization in the technical field. In particular, visualization is the process to translate linguistically or logically only difficult to formulate relationships in visual media, to make it so understandable. Furthermore, visualization is used to make a particular context clearly resulting from a given dataset, but not immediately apparent is.

It details the output data are omitted, which are negligible in the context of the desired statement. In addition, design decisions are always to make that visual implementation is suitable, and the link should be emphasized where appropriate. Visualizations therefore always imply an interpretation of the output data, but are also supplemented by textual or linguistic information in order to communicate a certain interpretation. Finally, visualization is also used purely illustrative to form about a counterweight to the body without transporting its own statement.

As a media for visualization, for example, manual, printed and computer graphics, data tables, film and computer animation to apply.

Examples

  • A chef shows the sales figures for the last quarter in a bar chart.
  • Spatial data, such as the distribution of population density in Germany are shown in a map and illustrated ( geovisualization ).
  • The turbine engineer can be the air flow based on the densities depict and considered the time course in a movie.
  • A protein structure looks like the chemist as 3D molecular representation on the screen in three dimensions with a polarization shutter glasses, and would probably also rotate the molecule.
  • The traffic planner plans a new traffic light at a traffic intersection and the simulation software to visualize him the changed traffic flow as a top view of the intersection.
  • An architect is planning a new building, and shows with the help of a visualization, such as this fits into the existing environment. Used is a visualization using 3D computer graphics.
  • When renovating or building design consultants will often also a visualization programs for decision-making. Based on a real photos of various change requests such as new doors, stained glass windows, or a completely new roof will realistically " tried ".
  • In process automation, all industrial facilities are controlled and monitored via the screen. The individual units are shown as blocks, status queries and manual interventions done via mouse click.
  • A well-known example of the scientific visualization of the weather forecast is on TV.

In the industrial and technical fields are available for the visualization of processes special software called visualization systems.

For Media Player visualizations denote techniques for representing played music in the form of moving images.

Visualization in the scientific sense

The science of visualization makes use of knowledge about

  • Color theory,
  • The structure of the human eye
  • Psychophysics and
  • Cognitive psychology

Made to derive application-related visual metaphors for proper, efficient and comprehensive identification of data patterns systematically. The type of visualization is a first separated part thereof, which is schematically by the visualization pipeline.

Visualization in Art

An individualistic example of visualization in the visual arts gives us the well-known German landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich with his statement:

" Close your bodily eye, that you with the mind's eye first seest your picture. Then bring to the light what you have seen in the dark, that it may react upon others from the outside inwards. "

Visualization pipeline

The visualization pipeline specifies the process chain by which data in images are transferred. It consists of connected in series for generating functions, filtering and cleaning data, for mapping the data to geometry and materials for rendering the objects and displaying the rendered image. The paradigm of extended visualization pipeline includes the interactive version or a control by at least one viewer.

Not absolutely necessary, but increasingly implies, is the implementation of the visualization pipeline as a visualization program on a computer. Its use then complements the automated finding and evaluating data patterns as part of the data mining.

Widespread is the following principle:

Data ( extraction ) → filter ( cleanup ) → conversion ( geometry and attributes) → Appearance ( depending on your perspective, display technology)

Scientific Visualization

The scientific visualization refers to the science and methodology of the visualization of measured data or simulation results which directly physical processes are assigned. Application fields originate from the engineering and natural sciences. A scientific visualization has to meet three criteria: 1 expressivity ( expression), 2nd and 3rd effectiveness appropriateness ( adequacy ).

A medical visualization

Medical visualization is the study and application of methods for the visualization of living beings for the purpose of medical diagnosis.

Information Visualization

The visualization of information, the visualization of the data that are not directly associated with the physical conditions and processes. These are, for example, documents, exchange results and demographic data.

Visualization in architecture

In architecture and interior design, the term visualization refers to the pictorial representation of a planned structure or an urban situation. The visualization takes the place of technical drawings, which are often difficult to read for the layman.

Examples

Logo

In album information or ideas are compressed graphically. You can be legally protected. Example: WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature )

Label

In Labels concepts or trademarks are shown for example by means of symbols. You can be legally protected. Example: Green Point

Cartoon

In cartoons and comics political, social, personal experiences and ideas are visually compressed. Example: Mordillo, Walt Disney

Portrait

In portraits of personalities and their life stories are included. Example: Einstein ( here even in a formula )

Diagram

Diagrams explain relationships experienced visually. Example: energy concept

Scheme

Generally limited to the essential representation of facts, see, eg, R & I - flowsheet.

Pictogram

A pictogram replaced short written notes. Example: escape route

Photo

A photo makes content directly experienced visually. Example: Photo of Mare Frisium

Wall

Wall Moderation visualized ideas, developments, Group processes.

Classification

The visualization is a cross -sectional science that - in addition to application area of computer graphics - can be interpreted differently by different observers as:

  • Subsection of the doctrine of the Present,
  • Branch of Wall moderation,
  • Branch of the ( scientific) journalism,
  • Part field of communication design,
  • Related to the visual arts.

Someone who wants to create a visualization of a situation which must

  • Understanding of the underlying contexts,
  • Know the recipient of its visualization,
  • Know how these relationships are best explained the receiver,
  • Meet the ambitions of the visualization, ie master appropriate tools and know their limits,
  • Have a basic understanding of visual sensory channels,
  • The substantive course of the conversation record and summarize without its own complement, falsification and commentary,
  • The red thread and central aspects of the conversation history to recognize and maintain a presence for attendees,
  • An increasing interaction density documented clearly.

Technical Product Visualization

The technical product visualization is the 3D representation of a product geometry in a viewing software. The goal of this visual data exchange is an improvement of the information flow and communication throughout the product life cycle. There is an easier way to communicate complex geometry based product information to people who are not CAD experts. Product visualizations such as screenshots of a CAD system or used as an alternative or as a supplement to telephone calls or conferences. The improved flow of information through product visualization iteration loops can be avoided and thus the product development process to be accelerated. However, should the technical product visualization to CAD data exchange, not replace, but rather assist in cases where the recipient does not need all the information present in a CAD data model.

Under Collaborative Product Visualization is understood in this context, the use of technical product visualization into enterprise -wide development organizations. A recommendation to inter-company exchange of visualization data was compiled from various companies from the automotive industry (including Bosch, Daimler Chrysler, Continental Automotive Systems, BMW and many more ) on the basis of specified use cases and reference processes within the ProSTEP iViP Association and under the name "PSI 2 - Collaborative Product Visualization ( CPV) " published.

Software

Visualizations can easily be created on a computer using visualization programs today. For the different tasks, there are a wide range of programs. 3D visualization are becoming increasingly important in business and are no longer used solely for promotional purposes. For sale, sales for internal presentations, product development and in the PR and Public Relations visualizations are becoming increasingly important. To make the visualization across the enterprise and external partners and suppliers available to the media once created are for the various applications ( print, web, video, CD - ROM, etc.) prepared and administered in a central database. And all this is already possible, while the products are still in the planning or production. Picture elements or entire imagery to be artificially created or integrated with real images. Classic filmed or recorded on video tapes footage is digitized, processed and provided with visual effects. Moving or still images are retouched, corrected or combined to create new, absolutely real action images.
