Vitt

Vitt is a fishing village on the island of Rügen in the district of Vorpommern Pomerania Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The village belongs to the municipality Putgarten.

Location

Vitt is located on the peninsula Wittow near Cape Arkona. Due to its location in a riverside gorge on the cliff, called Liete, Vitt is the land side not visible from a distance. If you come but to the edge of the canyon, you get a view over the thatched roofs of the village.

History

The origin of the name Vitt is not clear. Another possibility is a derivation from the word Vitte (s) / Witte ( Sw: vittja = " landing ", " Trade and stack space " ) from. In fact, Vitt was initially only temporarily inhabited Vitte where the fish caught has been processed. The name but could also be from Vit, a common Slavic name ( as a local founder ), or witt derived for white.

Since no certificate of incorporation exists, the exact age of the village is not known. But according to the reports of the Danish Saxo Grammaticus historian to have belonged to the village as a fishing and trading port Slavic Jaromarsburg at Cape Arkona early as the 10th century.

The first mention was made on 25 May 1290 as the Rüganer Prince Witzlaw II the place conceded the right and the freedom of fishing.

Above the village stands a small chapel Vitter, whose construction started in 1806 and was finally completed in 1816. It was built because more and more visitors came to the shores of the Old city based sermons Pastor Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten and some of the visitors found no place in bad weather in the fishermen's huts.

Tourism

The village is under monument protection is very good condition and has enjoyed a steady stream of visitors. In the small harbor trips around the Cape Arkona with fishing boats can be booked.

Vitt is best reached by bike or by train from Arkona Putgarten. There you have to turn off private cars, as driving is allowed on the Cape only with special permission.
