Putgarten

Putgarten is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen on the island of Rügen on the peninsula Wittow in Mecklenburg -Vorpommern ( Germany ).

The community is managed by the Office North Rügen with its headquarters in the town of Sagard. Putgarten is the northernmost municipality of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Geography and transport

Putgarten located in the northeastern part of the peninsula Wittow the island of Rügen Wiek Tromper between the east and the open Baltic Sea in the north. The hilly municipality is almost free of forest to the coastal forests in the north and east, and is mostly used for agriculture. The highest hills are located at Cape Arkona and reach about 40 meters above sea level. From there, the coast falls steeply to the Baltic Sea.

In Vitt is a narrow gorge, which was cut by a small stream in the cliffs.

History

Putgarten was on the 6th until the 12th century a settlement of Ranen. The name means Putgarten Under the castle. This refers to the Jaromarsburg. Putgarten belonged to their destruction to the local Svetovid sanctuary.

The place was until 1326 part of the Principality of Rügen and then the Duchy of Pomerania. With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 Rügen was and thus the area of Putgarten a part of Swedish Pomerania. In 1815 Putgarten came as part of Neuvorpommern the Prussian province of Pomerania.

Since 1818 Putgarten belonged to the circle or district Rügen. Only in the years 1952 to 1955 it was the county mountains belong. The village belonged until 1990 to Rügen county in the district of Rostock and in the same year part of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. The 1990 re- designated as the Rügen was 2011 in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen.

The sights are an attraction for many tourists daily, especially by bus and car to arrive. Putgarten and the visit are therefore locked for private car and bus traffic. On the southern edge of Putgarten there is a large car park, visitors can wander into the region from which. There is also the option by shuttle to the center of Putgarten to get to Vitt or the Cape Arkona.
