Samtens

Samtens is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern ( Germany ). The municipality is the administrative seat of the Office West Rügen, which includes an additional ten communities.

Geography and transport

Samtens is located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Stralsund and about ten kilometers south-west of Bergen. The Federal Highway 96 and the railroad Stralsund - Sassnitz run through the town. The community is one of the few inland towns on Rügen.

History

The environment was until 1325 part of the Principality of Rügen and then the Duchy of Pomerania. With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 became Rügen and thus also the place Samtens under Swedish rule after the place previously belonged to the Duchy of Pomerania. In 1815 the church and Pomerania came to the Prussian province of Pomerania. Since 1818 Samtens belonged to the circle or district Rügen. Only in the years 1952 to 1955 it was the county Putbus belonging. The village belonged until 1990 to Rügen county in the district of Rostock and in the same year part of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. The 1990 re- designated as the Rügen was 2011 in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen.

Samtens was first mentioned in 1318 as " Samtensze ". The place name is of Slavic origin and means as much as lonely.

The Good Plüggentin was since the 13th century belonged to the family of Grundis. Beginning of the 16th century it came to the monastery Eldena near Greifswald, but already in 1520 sold the property to the monastery of the family of the East. In 1717 it was purchased by then the family of Vieregge, but by the Great Northern War, they got into trouble and the estate was sold. The Manor House - neunachsig with richly articulated façade, was built in 1888 by the Lancken, the last in 1901 but fell with his horse and broke his neck.
