Prohn

Prohn is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen, about six miles northwest of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. It is administered by the Office Altenpleen based in the community Altenpleen.

Since 1990, the population has doubled. This trend is due to the convenient location close to the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, the scenic setting near the National Park Boddenlandscape and the good infrastructure of the region.

Geography

The municipality is located in a flat landscape in the hinterland of the bay Prohner Wiek. Notable waters are the Prohner reservoir and there pent Prohner Bach. In the municipality there are no major forest areas. Most of the surface is used for agriculture.

History

Mention is Prohn first time in a document from 1240, in which gives the Slavic prince of Rügen to Stralsund city rights. Prohn was probably named after the Slavic god Perun. Prohn was at times the seat of a princely bailiwick and also the seat of the Principality of Rügen.

After belonging to the Principality of Rügen Prohn fell in 1326 to the Duchy of Pomerania.

After the Thirty Years War to the year 1815, the area belonged to Swedish Pomerania and then to the Prussian province of Pomerania.

The congregation was then until 1952 part of the district Pommern -Barth and belonged then to 1994 to the circle Stralsund in the district of Rostock. Since 1990 Prohn part of the state of Mecklenburg -Vorpommern.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on 10 September 2001 by the Home Office and registered under No. 251 of the coat of arms role of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Blazon: "In gold increased, strongly -curved blue lace, topped with a silver cog; forward a left inverted, growing, red -winning, reinforced and gezungter black lion with double tail; behind a fallen black plowshare. "

The coat of arms was designed by the Weimar Michael Zapfe.

  • The late Romanesque choir and the sacristy of the church Prohn village were built of brick in the second half of the 13th century on a hill on which once occupied the castle of the Slavic prince house. Beginning of the 14th century, the late Gothic nave was added. The current neo-Gothic tower dates from the mid-19th century.
