Velgast

Velgast is a municipality west of Stralsund in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen. The community is managed by the Office Franzburg- Richtenberg with headquarters in the city Franzburg. The church is the area and population largest municipality in office.

Geography

Velgast located about 25 kilometers west of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund on a ridge of. The river flows through the south Barthe of the municipality.

History

Velgast is first mentioned in 1242. The community is thus one of the oldest in Western Pomerania. He is mentioned in a deed dated fief Rüganer Wizlaw I.. The place name is of Slavic origin. He was until 1326 part of the Principality of Rügen and then the Duchy of Pomerania

With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 came Vorpommern and thus also the place Velgast under Swedish rule after the place previously belonged to the Duchy of Pomerania. In 1815 the church and Pomerania came to the Prussian province of Pomerania.

The congregation was then until 1952 part of the district Pommern -Barth and belonged then to 1994 to the circle Stralsund in the district of Rostock. Since 1990 Velgast part of the state of Mecklenburg -Vorpommern.

Transport links

North of the village, the B 105 runs The railway Stralsund, Rostock leads through the village.
