Schaprode

Schaprode is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern ( Germany ). The community is managed by the Office West Rügen based in the community Samtens.

Geography

The municipality is located in the northwestern part of the Rügen Muttlandes, about 20 kilometers northwest of the city of Bergen on Rügen. It is bounded on the north by Wieker Bodden, on the south by the Udarser Wiek, on the west by the Schaproder Bodden and to the northwest by the Vitter Bodden. The only neighboring municipality of Schaprode is Trent in the east. The so-called "stumbling hook " - four kilometers north of the main town Schaprode - marked on the municipality the narrowest point between the islands of Rügen and Hiddensee that separate there only 1000 feet apart. In the surrounding coastal Schaprode is the island Öhe.

History

The environment was until 1326 part of the Principality of Rügen and then the Duchy of Pomerania. With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 complaints and thus the area of Schaprode became a part of Swedish Pomerania. In 1815 Schaprode came as part of Neuvorpommern the Prussian province of Pomerania. Since 1818 Schaprode belonged to the circle or district Rügen. In the years 1952 to 1955 it was the county mountains belong. The village belonged until 1990 to Rügen county in the district of Rostock and in the same year part of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. The 1990 re- designated as the Rügen was 2011 in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen.

The manor with the castle Granskevitz was originally owned by the family von Platen. Parts of the farmhouse date back to 1570. The building was in the 19th century but in 1765 and substantially rebuilt and extended. The estate was owned until 1945 by Charles Schultz. He founded in 1911 the seed company " Nordsaat ". Today, the estate is once again in possession of the Nordsaat Saatzucht GmbH.

Schaprode is one of the oldest settlement sites on the island of Rügen. The documentary first mention of Schaprode took place in 1193. Probably was at Schaprode a Slavic prince seat.

The center contains pipe roof covered fishermen's cottages, which have partly historical carved front doors. On the walls sayings are often attached - both in high German as well as in the local platform variant. The St. John's Church is a Gothic brick building dating from the 15th century. The interior of the building is designed by a mostly Baroque interior.

Flag

The flag of the municipality consists of green cloth, covered with a white -fringed, through Blue Cross.
