Vladimir Soltan

Uladzimir Jauhenawitsch Soltan ( born January 9, 1953 in Baranovitchi; † 1 June 1997, Minsk) was a Belarusian composer.

Life

Soltan studied composition with Anatol Bahatyrou at the Conservatory in Minsk (now Academy of Music). In 1979 he completed his studies and then worked as an assistant Bahatyrous to 1983. Subsequently, he was a teacher himself at the conservatory. In 1980 he joined the Soviet Composers' Union. In the following years he made in Belarus a reputation as a gifted young composer. Especially his opera " King Stach Wild Hunt " was very popular. In 1990 he was awarded the State Prize of Belarus. In 1997, Soltan was killed in a traffic accident.

Style

Soltan is in the tradition of Russian or Belarusian art music. His works often use folk songs or relate to national events. For example, his second symphony of the Minsk underground movement dedicated to the German occupation in World War II. Soltan's music is based on a freely handled extended tonality with characteristic strong chromatic or modal strikes. Hallmark of his works are concise rhythmic, melodic lines, a rather moderate dissonance content and the absence of experiments in meter or occupation. Overall, his music is not to be described as anachronistic, as compared to other composers of his generation Soltan, however, is very conservative.
