Vladimir Stasov

Vladimir Vasilievich Stasov (Russian: Владимир Васильевич Стасов, scientific transliteration Vladimir Stasov Vasil'evič; * 2.jul / January 14 1824greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † 10.jul / October 23 1906greg in Saint Petersburg.. ), Son Russian architect Vasily Petrovich Stasov (1769-1848), was probably the most influential Russian art critic of his time.

Life

In 1843, Stasov the exam in Law from. 1859 Arts was inducted into the Russian Academy. In 1900 he became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with his friend Leo Tolstoy.

Stasov was a committed supporter of the Peredvizhniki movement in the visual arts, and served as advisor to the Russian composers Group of Five. His correspondence are regarded as important sources for the then Russian cultural life. His younger brother Dmitri Vasilievich Stasov (1828-1918) was a prominent lawyer who was involved in the founding of the Russian Society of Music.
