VLAN Management Policy Server

VMPS ( VLAN Membership Policy Server) is a Cisco switch that manages the mapping between MAC address and VLAN of network terminals. For requests from remote switches to the VMPS master the VLAN Query Protocol ( VQP ) is used.

With the help of VMPS ports on the MAC address of the connected device assigned dynamically based a VLAN. Thus, a device can be connected at any point of the network and is automatically assigned to the associated VLAN on the Switch. The administration is done in the simplest case by means of a text file that is uploaded via TFTP to the VMPS master. Switch ports to which a device is connected with an unknown MAC address can be either locked or restricted to a particular fallback or guest VLAN and be isolated from the production network.

Other VMPS server

FreeNAC is an open source tool that uses OpenVMPS to communicate with the switches, but to manage the mappings uses a MySQL database and so can provide various other functions available that provide relief, especially for larger environments.
