Voicing (music)

Voicings called typical chord fingerings in jazz, especially on the piano and the guitar, but also specific chord layers in jazz arrangements.

Abbreviated notation

Many jazz and popular musicians use a standardized spelling for Voicings. In the numerical designation they think of a major scale ( Ionian mode) on the root note of each chord and number the notes with the numbers 1 to 13

The C major scale, for example, consists of the tones cdefgah - c'- d'- e'- f' - g' -a ' c ... This is referred to as 1 (stage 1 ), the e 3, g 5, the h and 7, the d is 9, F is 11 and A 13 are as Rare 2, 4 and 6 are, they are commonly referred to as 9, 11 and 13 are written. If this strain levels are altered, which is represented by a ♯ or ♭. A minor seventh in the basic position would therefore outline as follows: 1 - ♭ 3-5 - ♭ 7

Pianists often supplement the Note, which notes should be played with which hand, usually using a semicolon. A minor 11 chord would look like this: 1-5-9; ♭ 3 - ♭ 7-11 (left hand, right hand ).

In addition to the numerical description, other spellings are common. So in the guitar literature, the voicing of the Quart Vorhalts sus 4 is also described with tablature.

The main voicings include the following chords: major chord, large and small seventh chord sixth chord, minor chord, minor-seventh chord, half- diminished minor chord, seventh, minor chord, diminished seventh, excessive chord, excessive seventh and diminished chords.
