Voivodeship sejmik

As Woiwodschaftssejmik ( pl. sejmik województwa ) are referred to the regional parliaments of the voivodships in Poland.

The Parliament is composed of deputies, who are elected in each of the 16 Polish regions for a term of four years. The number of members of a Woiwodschaftssejmik vary from province to province depending on its population size. In provinces with less population, they consist of 30, in the heavily populated Masovia from 51 deputies.

The members of the Woiwodschaftssejmik choose from its members a chairman and a deputy chairman, which may be both not part of the Executive Committee of the province ( pl. Zarząd województwa ). The Chairman is responsible to regulate the affairs of the Woiwodschaftssejmik and lead debates.

The Woiwodschaftssejmik can statutes affecting the province adopt, provided these do not fall within the remit of the centralized certain Voivode. This may be about the budget of the province, development strategies and rules for managing the Woiwodschaftsbesitzes. Furthermore, he can choose the Woiwodschaftsmarschall ( pl. Marszalek województwa ), who chairs the Executive Committee also selected.

The word itself is a Sejmik diminutive of the word Sejm, which was the historic Polish diet and today is next to the Senate one of the chambers of the Polish Parliament. For the other historical uses of the term, see Sejmik.
