In the early days, the creek was in the north woods. Probably from the 8th century, the first settlements were created in this area. The bishops of Halberstadt tried for a long time without success the border continue to move eastward and set the Oker river as a border. Ultimately, however, was agreed on the full büttel Riede as a natural border between the dioceses. A chain of villages on the banks of reeds were to secure its influence, probably at the behest of Halberstadt, was founded. Most of these places were probably desolate between the 14th and 15th centuries and now remain as waste places in Papenteich. Only Algesbüttel was later repopulated as a single homestead. The border dispute ended only in the 16th century with the Reformation.
