Volva (mycology)

The volva ( vagina ) is a membranous or bulbous sheath that surrounds the fruiting bodies of many fungal species. Depending on the species, they may arise from different precursor structures: In the Scheidl rings and Wulstlingen the volva from the universal veil is created. The volva of Stinkmorchelartigen consists of the entire peridium, in some types of Stielbovistartigen from the remnants of Exoperidie.
