Vouzan

Vouzan is a municipality with 702 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Charente region of France in the Poitou -Charentes.

Location

The community Vouzan at an altitude of about 130 meters above sea level. inst and about 21 km ( driving distance ) east of Angouleme in the ancient cultural landscape of the Angoumois in the south of Charente.

Demographics

In the first half of the 19th century, the community had mostly 750-900 inhabitants; due to the phylloxera crisis in the wine and the mechanization of agriculture, the population then dropped continuously from the lows of the 1920s to the 1970s. Being close to Angoulême and in the countryside significantly lower real estate prices in recent decades, again a significant increase in population numbers recorded.

Economy

The residents of the community lived for centuries on the principles of self-sufficiency from agriculture; only the city of Angoulême came into question as a marketplace. The soils of the community still belong to the Bons Bois of the vineyard Cognac, but the paragraphs in expensive brandies and even with wine in recent decades tended to shrink, so that the wine industry today is no longer important.

History

Findings demonstrate the presence of humans in prehistoric times. From the 14th to the 16th century belonged Vouzan and surrounding lands the property of the Livenne family who played a not insignificant role in the region.

Attractions

  • As the Romanesque, but in the 17th century heavily modified chapel preserved testified that a predecessor of today's castle was already in the 12th/13th. Century. However, current château is from the 15th to the 19th century and combines medieval with modern elements. On the site there is also a dovecote ( pigeon ) from the 18th century. The castle was in private hands has been recognized in 1986, together with the chapel as a monument historique.
  • The present parish church is a neoromanischer or neo-Gothic building of the 19th century with a slender west tower with spire.
  • The town hall ( mairie ) is a handsome building of the 19th century.
  • On the outskirts there is a non-covered wash area ( lavoir ).
