Vršič Pass

Vršič

The Vršič (Italian: Passo della Moistrocca, German: Werschitz or Werschetzpass ) (. 1611m J. i ) is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia and provides the connection between Kranjska Gora and the village of Trenta in the Soča valley. The 50 hairpin bends exist in the northern part of the mountain pass partially cobblestone. The winter closure begins in late October and ends in early May. However, this rule is not mandatory, because the road conditions are crucial for a lockout. The pass forms the watershed for Soča ( Südverlauf ) and Save ( North course ).

The pass road was built in the years 1914-1916 as a military road into the Isonzo valley ( cf. Isonzo battles ) built by Russian prisoners of war. About 400 of them came to alone in an avalanche in March 1916. On the north side reminds the "Russian Chapel " ( Ruska Kapelica ) to the victim. About this road was a large part of replenishment for the great offensive of Austria -Hungary and Germany in the Twelfth battle of the Isonzo. Today's course follows only partially the original investment road; the south side is mostly recreated.

The pass is the starting point for many hikes in the Julian Alps. Near the pass is the refuge Tičarjev Dom (1620 m. J. i ). Behind the hut begins a footpath that takes you 15-20 minutes to the hut Postarski Dom (1688 m. J. i ). From there you have an impressive view of the south side of 2547 m. i J. Prisojnik high.
