VVVVVV is a Jump 'n' Run computer game of the Irish living in England independent game developer Terry Cavanagh. It has been developed entirely in Adobe Flash and released on January 11, 2010 for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. In VVVVVV is a cross-genre mix of puzzle game and platform game in which the player is the protagonist Space Captain Viridian controls, the strands at the beginning of the game in a parallel dimension and heads towards the result of the search of his crew members. Here, the character does not jump as in other games of skill, but reverse the direction of gravity.

Description

Action

On the spaceship of the protagonist Captain Viridian it comes to an incident by dimensional interference. Through a teleporter on board, the crew can save first, the crew members are, however, separated from each other, so that even Captain Viridian again finds himself alone. As captain of the spaceship he makes it his mission to rediscover all team members and find out the reason for the disturbance.

Gameplay

Unusually for a jump -n- run game the player is in VVVVVV is not possible to jump. Instead, he can change the direction of the gravitational push of a button, so that the character falls either up or down. In this way, the Captain Viridian will be overcome in the way of alternate or obstacles. Such obstacles are about spikes that kill Viridian touch, or flying objects, which must be dodged. The level of difficulty increases gradually as the game progresses and new game elements will be introduced again and again. Often the player is under time pressure or reaction. So it is common that for individual passages comparatively many attempts are needed because the character often dies. To counteract the potentially resulting therefrom is frustration, the developer has placed numerous checkpoints, where the protagonist is revived.

The game is fully operated with the keyboard. Here, the player needs only four buttons - two direction keys left and right, and an action key (default spacebar ), the gravity is reversed, as well as the Enter key, to operate devices that are located in the level.

Graphic

The graphical style of VVVVVV is based on the old Commodore 64 classics and brings with its minimalist presentation so the impression of a retro game. The font is the original of the C64 - text mode. Cavanagh said this in an interview that he was not particularly gifted in graphic design, so he at least try to make its games seem interesting.

Soundtrack

The official soundtrack of the game gave the Swede Magnus Pålsson. It includes fast, electronic Chiptunemusik and has also been published under the title PPPPPP on the website of the composer for sale.

Genesis

VVVVVV is Cavanaghs first game he sells commercially. He says this, it was in his eyes just one advantage of flash games not to have to force them to pay the game, the players, but to be able to finance this through sponsors. Because of the size of the game, however, he was forced to release the game for sale. For game design Cavanagh said that he wanted to make games that are so like the C64 games, with whom he had grown up. Cavanagh mentioned VVVVVV for the first time in June 2009 on his blog Distractionware. He wrote at the time that he worked two weeks and it would not much longer than another two weeks for you to complete. In the following weeks he kept the readers of his blog with more screenshots and explanations for gameplay and status of the development to date on the progress of the project.

For the development of the game Cavanagh had previously quit his job in a bank, even though he did not have enough built up reserves in order to finance his living. He therefore called on its website for donations for its innovative game and was supported by numerous donors money - after the first week he had already received $ 1,000 in donations.
