First, a relatively slim console version is available and the network is not configured. To be able to use the router without keyboard or monitor, at least one network interface must be configured.

The main task of Vyatta OFR - is to represent the essential features of a router. Due to the flexible use of a Debian operating system point of almost all features of the x86 architecture can be used.

The configuration of the routing engine is essentially the Configure Edit mode, in which all changes are written to a config file. The special feature here is that the changes are not immediately active, but the new configuration will only be activated with a dedicated " commit " command, which can be so controlled to commitende configuration before activating it again. Must then similar to Cisco additionally the configuration on the permanent memory ( eg hard disk ) are written so that the configuration is rebootfest. In addition to the configuration mode the underlying Debian Linux is fully accessible. Access to the system via a serial console, on the console screen, via SSH, or which also contained WebGUI.

  • Unlike OpenWrt OFR only runs on x86 hardware. As an embedded device running DSL and wireless router thus remain on the sidelines.
  • Unlike FLI4L OFR is "online", ie configured on the fly.
  • XORP was probably started a little earlier than Vyatta OFR - but also appears as up to date.
