Quagga (Software)

Quagga is a licensed under the GPL software package for Unix-like operating systems that supports IP routing protocols OSPF 2, 3, OSPF, RIP, IS- IS and BGP 4.

Quagga has emerged from the model developed by Kunihiro Ishiguro GNU Zebra. Unlike Zebra Quagga is developed by a broad community. The commercialized variant ZebOS is developed and marketed by IP Infusion, composed of Chief Technology Officer and Co -Founder Kunihiro Ishiguro.

The user interface ( vtysh ) strongly oriented to the Cisco IOS.

Architecture

Routing processes

There are already already extensions of quagga to support the routing protocols Babel ( protocol) and Protocol Independent Multicast.

Configuration

The individual protocols run in different processes, each bound to a local TCP port, which can be accessed via local Telnet client. About the Telnet connection only the commands of the respective routing process are visible. Alternatively, the console command can be used vtysh with which a surface in all routing processes can be configured simultaneously.

Use

Quagga is used mainly by companies and internet service providers as a cost and efficient alternative for dedicated router. In addition, quagga is well suited to simulate in training routing scenarios and test.

Quagga is used in backbone providers as BGP routers for the service Looking Glass. This router is used exclusively for the determination of routing entries, but is not itself involved in the routing.

ZebOS is used among others by F5 Networks Big-IP product series.
