Vyazma River

Bridge over the Wjasma in the city of Wjasma

The Wjasma (Russian Вязьма ) is the first major left tributary of the Dnieper.

In its entire length of 147 km, it runs within the Smolensk Oblast (Russia). Its catchment area covers 1350 km ². At the Wjasma is the town Wjasma. The river rises about ten kilometers north of the city in a swampy area and then turns into a big bow westward to the upper Dnieper. The drain in the young Dnepr itself is not much inferior to the flow of the Dnieper.

In earlier times, the Wjasma served as a liaison to the waterway between the upper reaches of the Dnieper and the Oka and Volga river system, with the help of a portage to a tributary of the Ugra.
