The Vytautas Magnus University (literally: Vytautas the Great University from Lithuania: Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas; Latin: Universitas Vytauti Magni ) is a university in Kaunas, Lithuania.

History

The VDU was called " University of Lithuania " ( Lietuvos universitetas ) founded in 1922, after Vilnius was occupied by Polish troops and Kaunas was now the capital of Lithuania. At this time possessed Lithuania de facto no university. 1930, the University of the name of the Grand Duke " Vytautas the Great" was awarded. After the annexation of Lithuania to the Soviet Union Vilnius was back to the academic center and the " bourgeois" VDU was gradually broken up. 1950 emerged from the remains of the Polytechnic Institute of Kaunas and Kaunas Medical Academy.

The VDU was founded in 1989 new. Kaunas University of Technology ( KTU ) and the Kaunas University of Medicine ( SMEs) from the Polytechnic Institute and the Medical Academy autonomous universities emerged after the restoration of national independence.
