Walking City

The Walking City project originated in 1964 as a vision of the British Archigram group of architects.

Overview

In charge of the development, the drawings and collages of this project here was Ron Herron. The original working title " Cities: Moving", which is still visible on early drawings, did not change until after the publication in "Walking City", as many observers were of the opinion, the robotic structure would look as if they could with her legs " go ".

Inspired Walking City was among other things, the theory of intelligent living machine by Le Corbusier, which should meet all the needs of their residents on compressed space. Archigram went a step further and developed a mobile shell, which should be tied to any fixed location, but moved always go where for example the labor of their to around 20,000 residents was needed.

The fact that buildings of enormous height and size " is serenely through the countryside move " ( Archigram ) can, was proved already by then the mobile missile launchers designs from Cape Kennedy, which reached a height of forty -story buildings.

In the context of an impending nuclear war during the Cold War, the concept of mobile cities seemed to be a viable alternative because their location and thus was variable a heavier target. Also use as a mobile detention center at edges of destroyed cities seemed to imagine.
