Walram, Count of Jülich

Count Walram of Jülich († 1297 ) was from 1278 to his death in the County of Jülich Count.

He is not to be confused with the Archbishop of Cologne Walram of Jülich († 1349 ).

Life

Walram the second son of Count William IV of Jülich and Margaret of Geldern, a daughter of Count Gerhard IV. Walram was provided was a younger son of the spiritual career and provost of Marienstift to Aachen. However, when in 1278 his father and his older brother William were killed together, he was heir to the county.

Walram was a fierce opponent of the Archbishops of Cologne and partisans of the Duke of Brabant and other Westphalian Big in the Limburg Succession dispute. In the battle of Worringen 1288 he sat Archbishop Siegfried caught, thus finally secured the supremacy over the archbishops, won, among other Zuelpich to and secured all other fiefs. He led many typical feuds with the neighbors.

Progeny

Walram married in 1296 Maria of Brabant, daughter of Godfrey of Aerschot. They had a son William. However, the heritage of the county fell to Walrams younger brother Gerhard.
