Walrus Islands

The Walrus Islands are a small archipelago in the Bristol Bay, an inlet of the Bering Sea, off the southern coast of Alaska. They lie south of the Togiak Bay, 18 km east of Hagemeister Iceland. Administratively, they are part of Dillingham Census Area.

The main islands are Iceland Summit, High Iceland, Iceland Crooked, Blackrock Iceland and round Iceland. With a north- south extent of 10 km Crooked Iceland is the largest island of the group.

The Walrus Islands were designated in 1968 as a National Natural Landmark. The archipelago is the southernmost and with up to 4000 animals last major United States in the surviving breeding ground of walruses. The Landmark consists of seven islands, which together form the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary.

Called Lieutenant Sarichew of the Imperial Russian Navy in 1826 one of the islands " Morzh " ( German: walrus ). Captain Mikhail Tebenkov, also from the Imperial Russian Navy later forgave the name " Ostrova Morzhovyya " ( Walrus Islands) for the whole archipelago.
