Walter Benz

Walter Benz ( born May 2, 1931 in Lahnstein ) is a German mathematician who is concerned with geometry.

Benz in 1956 at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Robert Furch doctorate ( axiomatic construction of the circular geometry on the basis of cross ratios ). After that, he was at the Johann -Wolfgang- Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, was a professor at the Ruhr- University Bochum, the University of Waterloo and the University of Hamburg (as successor by Emanuel Sperner ), where he is now Professor Emeritus.

According to him, Benz planes are designated to axiomatize a common concept of flat Möbius, Laguerre / Lie and Minkowski geometries.

He published the collected works of Sperner and by Wilhelm Blaschke ( as head of the Sperner founded by Wilhelm Blaschke Memorial Foundation ). Benz was long the editor of the annual report of the German Mathematical Society.
