Walter de Lacy (died 1085)

Walter de Lacy (* 1046 in Lassy, † March 22 1085 in Herefordshire ) was a member of a Norman noble family and came in the wake of William the Conqueror to England.

The de Lacy family derives its name from the village of Lassy in Calvados in Normandy. From this village came Walter de Lacy ( Laci also Lascy or written ), his brother Ilbert, the sons of Hugh de Lacy ( 1020-1049 ) and Emma de Bois L' Eveque.

Baron de Lacy

Together with his brother Ilbert de Lacy Walter accompanied William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, on his expedition to England and participated in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. He was with possessions in the border region of Wales, especially in Herefordshire, rewarded and nominated in 1071 as one of the Norman barons. Ilbert got the castle and town of Pontefract, York.

Walter began to build a number of towns and fortifications along the Welsh border. One of the most beautifully situated and best fortified ancestral homes of the descendants of Walter de Lacy was Ludlow Castle on the banks of the River Teme.

Was married Walter de Lacy with Adline Talbot. Although Walter had three sons, of whom Roger first in 1089 and after his death, his brother Hugh ( 1072-1115 ) began the inheritance of their father, they left no heirs. Therefore, Gilbert took (around 1100-1163 ), the son of Walter's daughter Emmaline, his mother's surname, and held the title as the fourth Baron de Lacy on.

Walter de Lacy died in 1085, after falling from scaffolding while working on a church founded by him. He is buried in the cathedral of Gloucester.

He is not to be confused with his great-grandson Walter de Lacy (1172-1241), 2nd Lord of Meath and brother of Hugh de Lacy, 1st Earl of Ulster.
