Walter Hofmann

Walter Hofmann ( born September 26, 1949 in Sömmerda ) is a former German canoeist. It was 1972 Olympic champion in canoe slalom.

Hofmann learned the canoeing on the Unstrut. In 1967 he moved to Leipzig to ASK forward Leipzig. He won in 1969 along with Rolf -Dieter Amend its first East German champion in two - Canadians, in 1972 and 1975 also won Amend and Hofmann. 1971 occupied the two second place behind Klaus Trummer and Jürgen Kretschmer. In the Canoe Slalom World Championships in 1971 in Merano Trummer / Kretschmer won before Amend / Hofmann and the third DDR boat with Uwe Franz and Ulrich Opelt; the team won the World Cup DDR driver also.

At the 1972 Olympic Games Olympic competitions were held in the canoe slalom for the first time. On the Augsburg Eiskanal Amendt and Hofmann winning ahead of Hans -Otto Schumacher and Wilhelm building of the Federal Republic of Germany and the French brothers Olry Trummer and Kretschmer finished fourth. After the fourth place at the World Championship in 1975 Amend ended his career.

In 1976 Hofmann DDR his fourth championship title, this time with Jürgen Kalbitz. In 1977 they won the canoeists at the World Championships in Spittal the world title.
