Walter Willett

Walter C. Willett (* 1945 in Hart, Michigan) is an American physician, epidemiologist and nutritionist, Frederick Stare Professor of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School and Board at Harvard School of Public Health, Department of Nutrition.

Work

Willetts specialty is the study of the connections between human diet and the development of diseases and has in this area in addition to more than 1000 scientific papers, the textbook Nutritional Epidemiology (1998) published. Its findings and recommendations are published in popular science literature, including in their 2001 bestseller Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide To Healthy Eating.

Willett is coauthor of the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow -up Study, two long-term studies on the health consequences of human food choices.

Positioning for supplementation

Together with the scientists Bruce Ames, Joyce McCann and Meir Stampfer wrote Willett 2007 an open letter to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in which the NIH decision is criticized recognize only evidence of efficacy in dietary supplements for health prevention, controlled on randomized, trials (RCTs ) are based. The authors advocate a general recommendation of the NIH for supplementation, even without such evidence of efficacy. Dietary supplements are cheap, available and non-toxic, thus at least " good insurance ".

Awards

For his work Willett has won several awards, including the " American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Award ( 1994) ", the " Distinguished Achievement Award" from the American Society for Preventive Oncology (1996 ), the " International Award for Modern Nutrition " (1997). and the " Charles S. Mott Prize" ( 2001).
